Leaking Skylight?: Here’s What to Do!

Nobody ever wants to deal with a leaking skylight. It’s just a plain, simple fact. The problem with a leaking skylight is you may be unable to initially detect the leak itself until it becomes a major problem. The underlying problem may have to do with a sealant issue, warping from fluctuating temperatures, or even rot and mold eating away at the skylight itself. It’s up to us as the roofing and skylight professionals to diagnose the problem areas and have you back to one-hundred percent once again. Read on to discover the benefits of repairing or replacing your skylight to help ensure your overall roofing system is up to par and no longer leaking.

What Causes a Leaking Skylight?

As mentioned above, there may be a number of causes which lead to the untimely and annoying leaky skylight. It could simply be a faux leak, where the condensation in your home (due to higher levels of humidity) causes water to accumulate and subsequently drip onto the surfaces below. While this could be the case, there may be a larger issue at hand. Let’s explore some of the potential causes and what we can do about them with our team of roofing and skylight experts!

Damaged Flashing Around Skylight

Damaged flashing around the skylight can be caused by age, heat, cold, rot, etc… What’;s most important with a damaged flashing issue is to replace the flashing as soon as possible> When the flashing is replaced with a new, stronger flashing material; you can most likely expect your problem to be solved. However, there may be other issues at play here. Let’s see what else could be causing your leaky skylight.

Poor Insulation Surrounding the Skylight

If there’s inadequate insulation surrounding the skylight, it may cause condensation to build up quite a bit when you have the heat cranked up during the winter, or the air-conditioning running high during the summer. The lack of proper insulation causes a large temperature difference between the skylight, the outdoor temperature, and the indoor temperature. This may lead to a “leak”, but it’s actually just condensation build-up. Regardless, you’ll want to resolve this issue with our help, sooner rather than later. Water droplets landing on you and the surfaces below the skylight are annoying. Even though this situation is not a “true leak”, it should be readily resolved before it begins to progress into a larger issue.

Weather Sealing Needs to Be Replaced

The water sealing may need to be replaced if there’s an ongoing issue with the sealant itself. This could be caused by a number of issues, consisting of everything from an improperly installed seal, a long-term decay of the sealant, or even the transition from hot to cold weather and vice-versa. The scenarios can be any of the above, yet it's important for us as the express to diagnose the true, root cause.

Full Replacement of Skylight Required

A full replacement of the skylight may be required if it’;s determined there’s simply too much wrong with the skylight itself. This can be a very real situation if the skylight itself has been neglected for many years, or if it was improperly installed from the beginning. Skylights themselves are subject to many environmental impacts (rain, snow, hot temperatures, freezing temperatures, etc…). Skylights are after all, the portal to the outside world within the roofing itself. Roofs are subject to any environmental impacts as well. When you factor in all of the natural elements pouring onto the skylight, you’ll need an expert installation, and a high-quality product. All in all, if your home does require a full replacement of a skylight, we’ll be sure to walk you through each and every step it takes to properly replace the skylight with high-quality materials and expert craftsmanship.
